The Best of Both Worlds- a unique holiday for groups of 8 friends on the Llŷn Peninsula, a week of adventure split between a brand new luxury house in seaside Aberdaron and a farmhouse dating to 1870 on the wild and beautiful island of Bardsey |
Sail by boat from a cove near Aberdaron to a world away from the stresses and facilities of modern life. The air on Bardsey is clean, the sea is clear, and the sunsets are stunning. You will see all manner of birds, seals, and maybe dolphins as well as rare and beautiful maritime plants. The island is steeped in history and has been a haunt of pirates, legendary resting place of Merlin, the site of an Augustinian abbey, and burial place of 20,000 Saints. www.bardsey.org ; www.bbfo.org.uk. You will be welcomed by the Island residents and have a chance to buy their craftworks and learn something of the life of farming and fishing, and the work of the Bird Observatory and Lighthouse. |

On Bardsey you will be staying in your own farmhouse, Plas Bach, a beautifully preserved and fully equipped with all mod-cons circa 1870. This means old fashioned washing and sanitation, water piped in from a mountain spring, and heating and lighting using gas lamps and candles. There are gas-powered fridge/freezers to keep your food fresh, good old-fashioned kitchens and rooms that are large and well appointed. Life before electricity and modern plumbing! Bedrooms are 2 double, 2 single and one twin room. You will need to take all your own food supplies, linen and towels. There are no roads, cars, phones, internet, restaurants or shops-just nature, the elements and the sea all around. |

Your group can start your holiday on either Friday or Saturday afternoon. Those arriving on Friday stay in Manaros for one night and then take the boat on Saturday morning, staying on Bardsey for 4 nights, returning to Manaros for Wednesday and Thursday nights. If your group arrives on Saturday then you will stay at Manaros for 4 nights, then take the boat to Bardsey on Wednesday morning, stay 3 nights on the Island and return to the mainland on Saturday. |
Some give and take in needed as the crossing is weather dependant. Colin Evans, the boatman, www.bardseyboattrips.com will decide exactly when each crossing will take place and may bring forward or defer either crossing for a day or so, in which event customers must understand that we are at the mercy of the elements and be prepared to work with us. For example, if your crossing to the island is delayed then you may need to be accommodated (at no extra charge to you) in another house on the mainland for a short period. If your return is delayed then you must be prepared to spend at least another night on the Island.
This holiday is available on a few dates only in October 2008, April-June, or September- October 2009.
The prices for accommodation as described, sea voyages, parking and transport to the cove and back to Aberdaron and care and attention throughout are listed here. A deposit of 10% is required on booking, with the balance due one month before the holiday starts.
For more information or if you would like to book, please call Peter or Simon on 01758 760652.
“We said we would remember this” wrote poet R.S.Thomas. “But tenses were out of place on this green Island ringed by the rain’s bow, a place that we had found-and would spend the rest of our lives looking for.”
